Celebrating qualification for the 1998 World Cup

Blackpool boss Paul Ince was a midfield dynamo in his heydey. The East London native joined his beloved West Ham in 1982, making his debut in November 1986.

After three seasons he joined Manchester United where he stayed for six years. Ince then went on to play for Internazionale in Italy, Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Wolves before ending his playing career at Macclesfield in 2006. During his playing days, Ince earned 53 England caps, seven as captain, scoring two goals.

He played at Euro 96 in England and the 1998 World Cup in France.

Here's Paul Ince's perfect England XI...

Goalkeeper

David Seaman

"He's got the biggest hands in the world! If you look at the saves he made at Euro 96, he's the number one."

Defenders

Gary Neville

"At Euro 96, Terry Venables played three at the back with Gary on the right. It showed he wasn't just a full-back."

Gary Pallister

"When you look at what Gary achieved at Manchester United his lack of international recognition baffled me."

John Terry

"He would complement Gary well. John could go and compete, win the ball and be more rough and ready."

Ashley Cole

"To consistently do what he has done is remarkable. He's rarely missed a game for club or country."

Midfielders

David Beckham

"Beck's was the best player in the world at creating a yard to deliver a cross. He could put the ball anywhere."

Steven Gerrard

"Gerrard would play in the holding position. He can play short or long passes and also fire the ball into players' feet."

Paul Scholes

"The complete midfield player. In his prime there was nobody better getting forward from midfield."

John Barnes

"John could come in off the wing, beat players and score goals. Shearer would benefit greatly from his work."

Paul Gascoigne

"Gazza was the best player I have ever played with and would be our playmaker. He could make things happen."

Forward

Alan Shearer

"Alan was the complete striker. Also he was a leader. He was a character and someone you could always rely on."
