Atherton Collieries on top in Flat Cap FA Vase Derby

Sunday 04 Oct 2015

Atherton Colleries secured bragging rights and a place in the FA Vase first round proper with a 6-2 victory over neighbours Atherton.

Matty Boland and Ben Hardcastle both scored twice to give Colleries a hard-earned win in an enthralling cup tie.

It was not so simple for Sholing, FA Vase winners two years ago, who could only manage a 1-1 draw against US Services Portsmouth.

Jimmy Cuthbert had given the visitors the lead, but Dan Miller scored with 20 minutes remaining to force a replay.

Wickham FC could not find an equaliser of their own as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Garforth Town.

Mark Simpson’s strike proved to be decisive, even though the Miners were reduced to nine men in the second half.

AFC Croydon were another side to win away from home, convincing 3-0 winners against Hollands & Blair.

West Didsbury & Chorlton racked up double figures against Dinnington Town as Nic Evangelinos grabbed a hat-trick in the 15-1 win.

There was another high-scoring tie in Sussex where Oakwood welcomed Lancing.

Having finished 4-4 after 90 minutes a frantic period of extra time saw Lancing put another five past their hosts to finish up as 9-4 winners with Ross Adams scoring four.

Whitchurch United ran out handsome 6-0 winners against Bournemouth, a tally matched by Silsden, who thrashed Daisy Hill by the same margin.

Congleton Town were 1-0 up at half-time at Emley, but with 15 minutes to go the game had been turned on its head and at 3-1 down it looked as though the Bears would be going home empty-handed.

However, three goals in ten minutes from the visitors put them back in the lead, and Town survived nearly six minutes of stoppage time to complete a miraculous win.

Hallam FC might challenge them for the title of comeback kings, as they roared back from 3-0 down to Harworthy Colliery.

The Sheffield side finished 4-3 winners thanks to a sensational hat-trick from Michael Blythen, the winner and his third coming from the penalty spot.
