The FA Youth Cup third round proper is taking shape

Harry Phillips held his nerve from the penalty spot to earn Southend United a 2-1 win after extra-time and knock Newport County out of The FA Youth Cup.

The young Shrimpers travelled to Wales for their second round tie, having breezed past Barton Rovers 9-1 in the previous round but they were behind inside the opening ten minutes.

Connah Hughes collected a pass from Jake Young before stabbing past Southend goalkeeper Josh Bexon.

The visitors restored parity after 66 minutes through Norman Wabo, whose shot proved too powerful for Rhys Davies.

And they completed the job shortly before half-time of extra-time, when Elvis Bwomono was brought down in the box and Phillips fired home.
