Spectacular Sykes sends Barnet through in FA Trophy

Saturday 30 Nov 2013
Barnet's George Sykes scored a spectacular goal in The FA Trophy First Round Proper

Teenager George Sykes scored his first goal for Barnet with a spectacular last-minute overhead kick in The FA Trophy to secure a dramatic 1-0 win at Hayes & Yeading.

The game seemed destined for deadlock in a tense encounter before Edgar Davids’ men snatched the late, late victory to salvage their hopes and pride.

Former England U16s international Keanu Marsh-Brown swung in a corner and Kieron Cadogan flicked the ball on with a header, before Sykes stunned everyone with his acrobatic finish.

What a way for the 19-year-old to break his duck for the Bees, but what a way for unfortunate Hayes & Yeading to lose.

Barnet’s might have been one of the most spectacular victories of the day, but it wasn't necessarily the most impressive.

That honour fell to Whitehawk, who won by an impressive 5-1 at Arlesey.

And Lincoln City rivalled them by notching the same scoreline at home to Stalybridge.

Elsewhere, the joyous away-day victors included Weston-super-Mare, who triumphed 1-0 at Aldershot and Nuneaton who sent Alfreton Town crashing out with the only goal of their match.

Maidenhead United earned their place in Monday’s Second Round Proper draw with a narrow win at Daventry Town, as did Guiseley at FC Halifax and Cambridge United on their travels to Salisbury.

Barrow Town won by the odd goal in three at Chester along with Boston United at Southport, Leek Town at Altrincham and North Ferriby United away to Hyde.

More convincing, were the 3-0 wins on the road achieved by Eastleigh at Bury Town and Woking at Hereford.

The Second Round Proper draw takes place at Wembley Stadium on Monday morning and will be published on TheFA.com around noon.
