The world-class facilities at St George’s Park recently played host to Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) group, with the country’s elite referees working on fitness and recovery at the home of England’s national football teams.
Regular visitors to the 330-acre Staffordshire site, PGMOL consists of 48 Premier League match officials in the Select Group, and 53 officials as part of Select Group 2, who officiate in the Championship.
During a recent visit to St. George’s Park, the match officials benefitted from a wide range of elite-level facilities, aiding recovery, injury prevention and match fitness.
Simon Breivik, Head of Fitness and Medical at PGMOL, said: “Here at St. George’s Park we’ve had a group of referees and assistant referees on the indoor pitch for training, as well as a group working on recovery with injury-prevention training.
“With the officials who didn’t have games at the weekend, we were able to top them up with some box-to-box, high intensity runs.
“You’ve got all the facilities the referees could possibly need here. Whether they’re up in the gym doing strength and conditioning, in the hydrotherapy area working on recovery or out on the indoor pitch – it’s all close together and makes our job easier.
“Training at St George’s Park is excellent. As soon as you enter the driveway you know you are entering a high-performance environment. For the referees that’s important, because it develops a high-performance mindset.”
