Gareth Southgate said he will make changes for England's friendly against Italy

England are back in action against Italy at Wembley on Tuesday night, after beating the Netherlands 1-0 in a friendly in Amsterdam on Friday.

Jesse Lingard fired in the game’s only goal – and his first for his country – as the visitors continued their World Cup preparations for the tournament in Russia.

Ahead of England’s clash against the Azzurri at the national stadium, Gareth Southgate and Raheem Sterling spoke to the media in a pre-match press conference.

Here’s five talking points from the press conference as England look to make it two wins from two during the international break.

Butland gets chance to shine

Jordan Pickford started in goal for England at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Friday night and kept a clean sheet on just his second senior appearance.

The Everton shot-stopper was largely untroubled during the 90 minutes, but Southgate will now give Jack Butland his World Cup audition against Italy.

“At the beginning of the week that’s what we decided we were going to do, give them both a game for the experience and we’ve stuck with the plan,” Southgate said.

“I think in lots of positions on the field we’ve got really good options and players that we know would go into the team and do well for us.”

It’s not too late for Wilshere

Jack Wilshere missed the trip to Amsterdam due to a knee problem, but Southgate had hoped the injury – which he described as “not too serious” – would be fine in time for Tuesday night.

However, while it has proved to be a game too early for the Arsenal midfielder, the England boss said Wilshere could still make his World Cup squad.

“I don’t think it’s too late for anybody, it’s obviously more difficult because there’s a couple of guys who have been in squads and haven’t had the chance to play for us,” he said.

“We will still be monitoring everybody between now and the end of the season because there’s probably a squad of 31 or 32 players that would be in contention and none of us know what’s going to happen over the next eight to ten weeks.”

Sterling aiming for new levels

With 15 goals and seven assists, Raheem Sterling has been on fire in the Premiership this season under the guidance of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

The 23-year-old admitted his tutelage under the former Barcelona manager hasn’t benefited his country just yet, but he said he wants to keep improving at international level.

“It hasn’t benefited England at all yet as I haven’t really got to the level I want to get to, but the manager at City has been a great help to me,” he said.

“It’s the same when I come away with England as Gareth’s always trying to help us strikers doing drills to get us better and improving.”

Kane back “sooner rather than later”

Southgate caught up with injured striker Harry Kane as England trained at Tottenham’s facilities on Sunday as the 24-year-old continued his rehabilitation.

Kane was ruled out for up to six weeks after damaging lateral ligaments in his right ankle at Bournemouth earlier this month, but Southgate said his star man is feeling positive.

“I don’t know exactly when he’ll be back, but he was confident it will be sooner rather than later,” Southgate said, when asked for an update on Kane’s return.

“His professionalism and his mindset is very positive, but for exact timescales you would have to speak to the medical team at Spurs.”

Southgate looking to the future

The England manager said there will be changes to the team which beat the Netherlands and hinted some of the new members to the squad could get an outing.

Four uncapped players - Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Nick Pope, plus Swansea’s Alfie Mawson and Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook – were all included in the squad.

"We'll make some changes but some we have brought in to have a look at for the first time, we are not just looking at the summer but beyond that as well,” he explained.

“There are so many different things you are looking to get from the games, on Friday we managed to achieve pretty much all of those things and it would be great if we could do that again tomorrow."
