Pedro scored in extra-time as Chelsea defeated Leicester City in the Emirates FA Cup quarter finals

Pedro’s extra-time header helped saw Chelsea run out 2-1 winners at the King Power Stadium to complete the line-up for the Emirates FA Cup semi-finals.

Antonio Conte’s reigning Premier League champions will face Southampton at Wembley Stadium connected by EE later this month while Manchester United and Tottenham go head-to-head as they also bid to win the world's original cup competition.

Here are five things we learned from the Blues’ quarter-final triumph at the King Power Stadium.

Morata makes his mark

Blues frontman Morata repaid his manager’s faith by taking full advantage of his first start in four matches.

The Spanish striker had been restricted to appearances off the bench in Chelsea’s last three outings but, having been deployed from the off against the Foxes, he handed his team the advantage three minutes before the break.

Morata latched on to a through ball from Willian and opened up his body to tuck away his first goal of 2018, his first since a 2-0 Premier League win over Brighton & Hove Albion in December.

If at first you don’t succeed…

Persistence paid off for Leicester as they levelled things up with 15 minutes of normal time to go.

Claude Puel’s troops had struggled to find a way back into the tie as they trailed 1-0 to Morata’s opener but after Riyad Mahrez had managed to jink past Marcos Alonso and work the ball into the box, the Foxes finally pounced.

Vardy had one effort blocked, then Vicente Iborra had two unsuccessful stabs at finding a way past Willy Caballero but a frantic melee in the Chelsea area ended with Vardy pouncing to convert the loose ball.

A little extra goes a long way

As the world’s original cup competition continues to evolve with the modern game, replays at this stage of the Emirates FA Cup were abolished last season.

All four of 2016-17’s four quarter-final ties were decided within the regulation 90 minutes and so had all three matches so far this season – but Leicester and Chelsea broke the mould.

With Vardy cancelling out Morata’s first-half strike, that set up a landmark period of extra time, with Pedro popping up with what would prove to be the winner.

Home comforts over for the Foxes

The King Power Stadium had been a fortress in 2018 for Leicester but today, it was conquered at long last.

The Foxes had been unbeaten at home since the turn of the year, a sequence that included an Emirates FA Cup fifth-round triumph over Sheffield United.

However, Chelsea provided the key to unlock Leicester, consigning their undefeated home run to the past.

Do things bode well for the Blues?

Could victory over Leicester prove an almighty positive omen for Chelsea? It has done before.

This was the sixth Emirates FA Cup meeting between these two sides and the Blues have come out on top every time.

The last three times they defeated Leicester, in 1997, 2000 and 2012, Chelsea had gone on to win the competition – are more good times in store in 2018?
