It was all systems go at the national football centre in July with a host of European outfits on site for their pre-season camps.

After re-signing Daley Blind from Manchester United, Ajax spent a week in Burton.

They took on Wolverhampton Wanderers and Walsall in a double-header at the latter’s Banks’s Stadium.

Director of football, Marc Overmars was also on the trip and the former Arsenal winger said: “It’s a great facility, you can’t find better.

“It’s quiet, very green and we were also very lucky with the weather.

"Many people recommended the venue to us".

“Our season started [via Champions League qualifiers] very early and it was good preparation.

“Everything was perfect and if you were to give St. George’s Park a mark out of 10, it’s a 10.”

Meanwhile, Benfica returned for a third time fresh from their Sado International Tournament success.

Boss Rui Vitoria brought a 30-man squad to the UK who once again made use of all the facilities and took on Swindon Town in a behind-closed-doors match.

Targeting a return to Spain’s top flight at the first time of asking, Manolo Jiménez’s Las Palmas then arrived on site as part of their pre-season preparations.

They faced Birmingham City on the Gordon Banks Pitch – and saw off a youthful Blues 4-1.

New boss Manolo Jiménez, who was appointed in the close season, and his players took part in media duties in informal settings.

Last but certainly not least, French side Amiens SC checked in.

They also faced Cardiff City in a friendly, ahead of the Bluebirds’ Premier League return.

Reflecting on the visit, Amiens boss Christophe Pélissier said: “The facilities – the changing rooms, the gym, spa, hydrotherapy are top class and ideal for a pre-season camp like ours.”
