That competitive edge

Girls from the John Taylor Academy find their FA People's Cup fever for 2018

Wednesday 14 Feb 2018

The last two years has seen a real growth in girls football and it’s really kicking on now.

Our Year Nine team are in the County Cup and we’ve got three girls teams in similar competitions in local league football and obviously interest in the People’s Cup too.

The FA People's Cup 2018
  • First round: 23-25 February
  • Semi-finals: 24-25 February
  • Finals: 28-29 April

A lot of the girls are playing outside of school now as well, so it’s just superb and really positive for them and the school.

It breeds confidence in them and is great socially too, as they’re developing team work skills and you see the confidence and enjoyment that they get from playing and it’s making a real difference.

It’s becoming the norm and it’s great to see, they’ve all got big smiles on their faces and loving it.

We came down to St. George’s Park to get a taste of it with some small-sided coaching alongside some other teams who have signed up and they’ve all been asking about how they can enter the competition, so it’s interesting to them and to us as a school.

If we can give them that competitive edge and if they can get together in their own time and organise themselves into teams, then hopefully they’ll go back to school and talk to their friends and we’ll get a few teams out of it.

This was their first experience of the FA People’s Cup and we could have brought the whole year group down here.

The girls play a lot of football so to be able to bring them here is a real privilege and we’re lucky to be based so close.

The 2018 FA People's Cup kicks-off between Friday 23 and Sunday 25 February when the first round begins, at venues across the country.
