England celebrate at the final whistle

England need to avoid defeat to Italy to qualify for the UEFA European Women’s U17 Championship finals following Monday’s win over Germany.

John Griffiths’s side, who were 2-0 victors over Poland on Saturday, took the lead in just the second minute through Bristol City forward Emily Syme.

Oxford United striker Gabby Ravenscroft doubled the lead nine minutes later with her second goal in two games.

Germany, the holders, pulled one back through Verena Wieder but the Young Lionesses held on to claim all three points.

The only downside of the afternoon was the dismissal of substitute Ella Rutherford after she picked up two yellow cards.

But a draw against Italy on Thursday will allow England to book their place at the eight-team finals in Czech Republic in May.
