Amputee teams bid for a place at Disability Cup Final

Portsmouth Amputees will be among the eight teams bidding for a place in The Disability Cup Final this weekend

The last set of this season’s English Amputee Football Association (EAFA) Irwin Mitchell National League fixtures takes place this weekend, doubling up as the gateway to The FA Disability Cup Final on at St. Georges’ Park on 6 May. 

Eight teams, Everton, Peterborough United, Portsmouth, Arsenal London, Manchester City, UL Sport, Partick Thistle and Brighton & Hove Albion will battle it out this weekend in Birmingham.

Everton Amputees have already booked their place in the Final by virtue of winning the EAFA League Cup, with reigning league champions, Peterborough United Amputees, looking to secure their place too should they reclaim the title.

The day will see players from both teams, such as Gary Marheineke of Peterborough, who also works for The FA Skills Team, go against the likes of Steve Johnson from Everton, a two-time World Cup winner.

Both teams also have several players that have been selected for the in this year’s European Championships, which will be held in Istanbul from 1-10 October.

The format of the day will consist of a 7-vs-7 match and, due to unlimited substitutions, there will be an opportunity to see a variety of top quality players take part.
