Leicester hold off champions Blackburn as Tottenham win again

Blackburn still have to beat the Southern Division winners to get their hands on the medals

Blackburn Rovers dropped points for just the second time this season as Leicester City held the FA Women’s Premier League Northern champions to a valiant draw.

Rovers secured top spot with a victory against Derby County last week, but the going was not quite so straightforward this time around as Paige Crossman’s brilliant solo effort salvaged a 2-2 draw for the visitors.

Crossman rounded the keeper before delivering an audacious lob into the far corner – finishing off a comeback which had seen the winger halve the deficit with a header before the break.

That came after Jess Holbrook scored Rovers’ 100th goal of the season on 26 minutes, while Alex Taylor’s low effort had made it 2-0.

Huddersfield had been the only other team to stop the champions in their tracks, but they fell to an eighth defeat of the season on Sunday as West Brom prevailed 3-1.

Abi Cottam opened the scoring after just nine minutes, though Emily Heckler levelled up for Huddersfield before the break.

There was still time for Ellie Sargent to restore the lead however, while Trina Greaves’ extravagant chip marked the ideal way for defender Kelly Darby to celebrate her 150th appearance for the club.

Elsewhere, Fylde prevailed 2-1 at Bradford City, with the winner coming 20 minutes from time in a frantic period where all three strikes came in the space of 15 minutes.

Tottenham Hotspur moved three points closer to the FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division title, on the same day their reserve side took their respective crown.

The senior side prevailed with a 2-0 victory over Coventry United, with Nikita Whinnett opening the scoring barely 60 seconds after taking to the park.

She found the net with 22 minutes left to play, converting Wendy Martin’s low cross as Spurs took their 13th win out of 14 matches.

That was not before Bianca Baptiste once again found the net, wrapping up the contest in the final ten minutes.

Charlton kept up the pace though, with Rose Sullivan’s 21st-minute header helping them on their way to a 3-0 win away at Portsmouth.

Kim Dixson added a second before the break, while Kit Graham added gloss to the scoreline with a fine strike ten minutes from time.

Finally, Rebecca Carter rescued a point four minutes from time for Lewes, cancelling out the opener from Gemma Bryan in the first half for Crystal Palace.
