Club administration

A Guide To

Completing the administration required to run a football club can be quite daunting for people new to the role.

To help you, The FA have produced a Guide to Club Administration that details the essentials involved in running a club.

Safeguarding children

Safeguarding children covers everything from sideline abuse – swearing and bullying – to serious sexual abuse. In football, safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

If you are involved in a club or league, which involves anyone under the age of 18, you need to ensure you have the appropriate safeguards in place.

Club finances

Club finances should be managed and administered by the club treasurer. It is important to ensure that income exceeds or at least matches expenditure and that adequate records are kept.

Clubs need to cover essential expenditure such as affiliation fees, league membership fees, pitch hire charges, kit and equipment.

Preparing a Budget

A budget needs to forecast what kind of income the club is going to generate and what items will need to be purchased.

To prepare a budget, the club treasurer will need to gather a range of information, dependent upon the type of club you are and what activities you undertake.

Members services

The FA has launched an online information-sharing tool to help your club with its administration. The aim is to provide online access to your football and up-to-date information instantly, whenever you need it.

Member Services is available to affiliated clubs and leagues, and the good news is it is free.

Club twinning

Over 300 FA Charter Standard Clubs have now been twinned with McDonald’s restaurants. This means that 300 clubs have benefited from free kit and equipment, and often much, much more.

Many restaurant franchisees have donated space for meetings, opportunities to promote club events, sponsorship and even volunteers to support community football.

FA Charter Standard

The FA Charter Standard programme is a kitemark, which recognises and rewards high quality provision in club and league football.

The kitemark is awarded to clubs and leagues that are well run, sustainable, which place child protection, quality coaching and safety paramount. There are already 4,500 FA Charter Standard Clubs.

Managing Teams

Managing teams can be a rewarding task, but it takes much effort and preparation to ensure it is a rewarding, learning experience for all involved.

Coaches need to prepare players and themselves for a game, support players during a game and understand how to review own contributions to a team.
