After his four-year-old son Thomas first joined Codnor Boys FC 13 years ago, Phil Moss became determined to join the club himself. While at training sessions and matches with Thomas, Phil was always keen to find out more about the club, how they worked and more importantly how he could help out.
Phil started to volunteer with the under-6s by setting up pitches and training equipment and helping to organise the players when they arrived for their coaching sessions. Phil’s involvement grew further and he was soon invited to join Codnor Boys FC’s club committee, while also continuing to help out with his son’s age group – helping with mini soccer games, training sessions and organising team events. With Phil’s encouragment, the team grew into an 11-a-side under-18s team, with Phil now acting as the squad’s assistant manager, running training sessions, helping to set up the goals before matches, and managing the club’s website including updates from the games and club meetings.
Phil’s work on the club committee included ensuring the club met the criteria to achieve FA Charter Standard Status, which they successfully gained in 2005 thanks to their hard-work in developing their coaching structures and training sessions. Phil was elected club Chairman soon afterwards – chairing all club meetings from club development to monthly management meetings to overseeing discussions around girls and boys teams. During his time as Chairman the club also received FA Charter Standard status in 2005 and they also won the FA Charter Standard Club of the Year Award from the Derbyshire and East Midlands FA.
Phil is still very hands on with the day-to-day running of the club and in particular Codnor Boys’ annual tournament which sees dozens of teams from the local area invited to take part in a friendly competition across all age ranges. Phil’s committment to local football has also seen him volunteer at Heanor Town FC – assisting with training sessions and also on match days.
