Roy Smith has dedicated the past 30 years to youth football in the Middlesex area working for a number of teams making a real difference to the local community.
Roy originally started coaching at Perivale Junior School and at the local scout group where he entered them into 5-a-side tournaments throughout the county. His excellent start to coaching didn’t go unnoticed and he soon moved onto become the Assistant Manager at Pitshanger FC under 12s.
Roy has worked at the club ever since and is now the Vice President and as part of his duties as League delegate, Roy attends the Harrow Youth League meetings on the club’s behalf. Despite the fact that he is now retired, he still also works as a groundsman for the club, marking out pitches and putting up nets throughout the season. His outstanding efforts have been rewarded by the club where he has won the Clubman of the Year three times at their annual awards ceremony.
He takes a great deal of pleasure in the unsung work of grassroots football and is always willing to roll up his sleeves and get involved. For years when the league were struggling to recruit referees Roy would offer his services and he took charge of countless games over an eight year span to ensure that the players at Pitshanger FC could take part in competitive football.
Throughout his time with the club, Roy has been influential in raising money for the Leukemia Trust after his son contracted the disease when he was 11 years old. His first sponsored walk for the charity was from Middlesex to Brighton and he involved a number of people from Pitshanger FC and raised a total of £8,000 for the charity. His contribution to charitable causes is still going strong to this day where he takes part in the annual Leukemia Trust 10 mile walk.
