Founded in 1976 Moorside Rangers are still going strong 38 years on and this is down to the fantastic work of Brian Elsey.
Brian has dedicated the past 38 years to the development of the club and has been the driving force behind Moorside being one of the first teams to be awarded the coveted FA Charter Standard status back in 2001.
With the leadership and enthusiasm of Brian behind them, the club has grown to over 500 members with 42 teams across all ages. The expansion has been remarkable and the local community has benefited from free training sessions and courses that Brian has helped to run. In 2012, Moorside became the only organisation in the North West to offer a football programme for children with Downs Syndrome. They are also the only grassroots football club in the UK to be involved in the National DS Active programme.
It has not always been plain sailing for him at Moorside Rangers as the club ran into financial difficulties in 1987 when their club house was destroyed through vandalism. Not to be put down, Brian worked tirelessly to ensure that funds were raised for repairs and a new and improved facility was opened just short of a year later.
Not just content with building and refurbishing a new club house, Brian has also been instrumental in the development of an all weather pitch that allows Moorside and other youngsters from the local area to play all year round.
Brian’s amazing work at the club has been recognised by the FA with regional and national club of the year awards as well as being accredited with the FA Charter Community Club status.
His enthusiasm for the game and selfless volunteering has led him to create an outstanding club at Moorside Rangers and reaffirmed his status as a real grassroots hero.
