Guide 5 - 11

This game gets right to the heart of the Foundation Phase DNA and its key messages, as it introduces the idea of finding space and playing the ball forward whilst under pressure.
Too often players are encouraged and applauded for kicking the ball away or playing the easy pass. There’s great value in doing these things at the right time, but it’s important to equip your players with so much more to avoid this being their only response when they’re in pressurised situations. If players are denied the opportunity to pass the ball backwards, they must come up with other solutions and this is the main objective when playing this game.

The activity also gives the coach lots of opportunities to help players understand how they can effectively use the limited space available and this, too, is vital for the development of young players.
