Futsal: arrival activity

Help introduce futsal to your youngest players by setting up this arrival activity, which will help your players develop their ball control on the court.

    Organisation

Futsal is great for Foundation Phase players and the best way to introduce it is by playing lots of small-sided games. This one is a 3v3 across the court; one game uses goals and can use goalkeepers (shown on the right of the graphic) and another without goalkeepers but with a scoring zone instead (shown on the left of the graphic).

    How to play

This game is designed to help your young players develop their ball control and mastery over the ball.

When your players are this young, work with it and understand it - they have years to perfect their mastery over the ball.

In this game players can score in the usual way, but if the ball goes out of play (whichever team it goes out off) that team concedes a goal. Having this simple rule helps players understand the importance of good control as it punishes poor passes, poor control and aimless kicks away.

You must work sensitively and patiently in this game, as the ball may be out of play a lot to begin with. However, this will soon change as players improve quickly.

    Progression

To progress the game, bring in different challenges such as: a goal is only conceded if the shot is off target or the pass goes out or the player dribbles it out of play. This will allow a specific focus that is different from the original game which punishes everything.
