National Literacy Trust

The FA writing challenges

Win an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour at Wembley AND tickets for your whole class to attend the SSE Women’s FA Cup Final!

The Football Association and National Literacy Trust have teamed up to create a series of three writing challenges for students from Years 7 & 8 based around the SSE Women’s FA Cup.

The National Literacy Trust works in deprived communities to give disadvantaged children the literacy skills they need to succeed in life.

Aimed at both boys and girls, students are challenged to write rousing speeches, poems and articles. Each challenge is introduced by inspirational videos of top female players.

There are amazing prizes on offer for each challenge including match tickets for your whole class to attend the SSE Women’s FA Cup Final, behind-the-scenes tour of Wembley, students’ work to be showcased on concourse screens and much more!

Challenge 1 – Exclusive! Inside the team camp

Students are challenged to imagine that they have been contracted by a newspaper to write an account giving ‘exclusive insight’ to the activities, spirit and mood of their team prior to a big game.

They have the choice of putting themselves in the boots of a player before the SSE Women’s FA Cup Final or another major match. Lesson plans, example copy and scaffolding tools are provided to support teachers and students. Download the teacher pack and watch Bristol City's Corrine Yorston setting the challenge for your students.

Challenge 2 – Motivating messages

Students are tasked with writing a poem to be placed on the dressing room wall of the teams in an SSE Women's FA Cup tie.

They need to include strong messages that will unite the squad, remind them that their fans are behind them and cheer them to victory.

Lesson plans and supporting resources are provided to support teachers and students. Download the teacher pack and watch Reading's Mary Earps set the challenge for your students.

Challenge 3 – Winning Words

The time is upon us. Students must take on the role of captain and inspire the team to a famous victory with a spectacular speech.

Students will need to find words that will lift every player in the squad to play at the top of their game. How will you destroy doubt and create confidence?

Teachers and students are provided with lesson plans and resources to support activity. Download the teacher pack and watch Bristol City's Hayley Ladd setting the challenge for your students.
