The skilful striker, renowned for being a deadly finisher and a free-kick specialist, shouldered the blame for Italy's exit from Euro 2000 when he missed a glorious chance against eventual champions France.
But when he is on form he is breathtaking. On the ball he can break through tackles with ease, and he seems to have the ability to hit the target from anywhere on the pitch.
The 29-year-old Juventus player has played his way back into the side after a disappointing World Cup, and has made good in the azzurri's Euro 2004 qualifying campaign, and scored five goals in six games for Italy.
