Bulgarians win three-way battle

In what was one of the closest and most entertaining of groups, Bulgaria sprung a surprise by recording a fabulous 2-0 win away to Belgium.

That set-back knocked the Belgians off course but the Bulgarians kept on going, remaining in control of the section and eventually qualifying with a game to spare after a 3-0 win in Andorra.

Belgium beat Estonia 2-0 at home but only finished third after Croatia sensationally ended Bulgaria's unbeaten record on the final day with Ivica Olic's goal securing a 1-0 triumph.

That took them into the play-offs ahead of Belgium as they had the better head-to-head record, the 4-0 win in March in Zagreb proving to be pivotal.
