Mo Marley praised her England players for their determination in earning a valuable point against France in their opening match of the UEFA European Women’s U19 Championship Finals.
Three Lions stopper Lizzie Durack saved a second-half penalty from Léa Declercq and tipped a wayward Faustine Robert cross against the bar as Marley’s young charges kept the 2010 champions at bay.
The French enjoyed more possession but failed to convert this dominance into clear goal chances and the England Coach believes that is mainly down to her side’s refusal to lose their Euro opener.
She said: “I thought it was a very resilient and mature performance. The players held on well under so much pressure.
“We didn’t have a lot of the ball but we made it quite difficult for France to break us down.
“The girls found it really difficult but we’re happy with the way things have gone. We’re very happy with what we’re classing as a big point.
“France got a little bit frustrated at the end and that gave our girls that little bit of confidence to hold on. We never had a lot of the ball but it takes a lot of character and a lot of resilience to keep going when you haven’t got the ball.
“Credit to the players, I’m really pleased for them.”
England’s second group game is against host nation Wales, who lost their opening game 1-0 to Denmark, on Thursday.
