England Women’s winger Karen Carney is ready for the squad’s homecoming later this week when they face Slovenia at Swindon Town’s County Ground.
Hope Powell’s side go into the game on the back of a 2-2 draw in Saturday’s Euro qualifying opener with Serbia and whilst the players were disappointed not to be bringing three points back from Belgrade, Carney is now fully focused on the next match.
“I know it’s a cliché, but we have to take these Euro qualifiers one game at a time,” she said.
“We need to keep improving and aim for a good performance and result every time we play.
“Everyone wants to qualify for the Euros, that is the overall objective. But to achieve the overall objective, you’ve got to deal with all the smaller ones properly.”
The Slovenia clash will be England’s first home match since the summer’s World Cup and whilst there is pressure on the Three Lions to win this match, Carney believes the squad can handle it.
“There is a greater expectancy when England play now,” she added. “As players, though, we want to improve, we want to perform well.
“We have high standards, we have targets and we want to reach them. We do put pressure on ourselves because we want to beat the best.”
