Rachel Yankey on her journey from 'Ray' to England's most capped player
Rachel Yankey has revealed how she rose to the very top of the women’s game.
When she donned the captain’s armband against world champions Japan last Wednesday, the 33-year-old became England’s most capped senior player of all time, surpassing Peter Shilton’s previous record of 125 caps.
But that special landmark must have been merely a dream when she was forced to cut her hair short and go by the name ‘Ray’ in order to play the game she loved as a youngster.
Yankey is a member of Hope Powell’s 23-strong squad that flew to Sweden on Monday for the European Championship Finals.
