England's Gemma Bonner hoping for Euro debut and a second winner's medal in Sweden
Gemma Bonner has a double target at this summer’s Euro Finals in Sweden - a senior cap and a second Euro title.
The Liverpool Ladies defender is part of Hope Powell’s squad for the competition, which starts on Wednesday, and is also the only member of the group still waiting for her senior debut.
But she already has a wealth of international experience with England's U17, U19 and Under-23 teams, including a winner’s medal from the Euro U19 Finals of 2009.
And the 21-year-old is hoping that she can bring that know-how into the senior set-up should the chance arise.
Bonner told FATV: "Playing at the younger age groups and getting experience in these tournaments always helps.
"We won it that year and came close again the year after, so hopefully as younger players, we can bring that experience through.
"We won the tournament so we know how it feels and hopefully we can bring something into the senior set-up.”
England kick-start their Euro campaign in Linköping on Friday evening when they face Spain in their group opener.
After playing two warm-up games against top opposition in Japan and host nation Sweden in recent weeks, Bonner believes the Lionesses are now ready for action.
And the Yorkshire-born central defender is ready to step into the team if needed for what would be her first experience in senior international football.
She added: "Hopefully, if I get the chance, I'll be able to make the most of it after all of the hard work I've put in.
"It would be an achievement which I'd be massively proud of.
"You dream of making your international debut, but to be able to do it in a massive competition would be even better.
"I'm just really proud to be here, named amongst some big name players with a lot of experience and many of them having over 100 caps.
"To be in the same squad as them is a massive privilege and that's something I'll learn from.”
