France opened up their Group C campaign with a 3-1 victory over Russia thanks to two goals from Marie-Laure Delie and one from Eugénie Le Sommer. Elena Morozova replied for the Russians.
France coach Bruno Bini said: "We're happy, but the important thing isn't to have the first win – it's to have the last win.
"The girls were a little tense in the first few minutes because they've been waiting for this competition for so long.
"I'm satisfied to have the three points and satisfied to have scored goals – and what goals they were. There was a lot of fluidity to the team. The difference between the two sides came down to technique, and we can be happy to have been technically stronger."
Russia coach Sergei Lavrentyev added: "First of all, I'm disappointed – not with result but with how we played.
"We prepared well for the tournament and had good friendly matches, so I don't understand what happened to the team today.
"We'll try to analyse the situation. There were a lot of unforced errors and that stopped us playing the way we wanted to play."
