England Women’s next match will be at Peterborough against European outfit Iceland on Friday 14 May.
England Women’s next test in their preparations for hosting next summer’s UEFA European Women’s Championship will be against European outfit Iceland on Friday 14 May.
This friendly international will be played at Peterborough United FC and will be the first time the England women’s team has played at London Road.
England played Iceland in a World Cup play-off last season over two legs, drawing 2-2 away at the National Stadium of Iceland then winning 1-0 at Birmingham City’s St Andrews ground.
Iceland are currently top of their group in qualifying for the 2005 UEFA European Championship Finals, so will provide a tough test for England. Hope Powell’s England side have already qualified for Euro 2005 as hosts.
National Coach Hope Powell said: "Iceland proved a hard test for us 18 months ago when we played them in the World Cup play-offs. We beat them at home, but found them hard to break down as they are a good defensive side.
"It is our ambition to continually pit ourselves against strong teams as we prepare for the European Championship next June. We have qualified automatically, but our young squad still needs a high standard of competition to continue to improve.
"It’s good to be playing at yet another new stadium to showcase the best of women’s football to a new audience. I can assure the people of Peterborough that they’re going to see a competitive, entertaining game featuring players who have played professionally in America as well as the stars of our domestic league."
England Women are currently placed 13th in the FIFA World Rankings, while Iceland are ranked in 17th place. England have played Iceland six times, winning five times and drawing just once.
England have played four home internationals so far this season. They have included wins against Australia 1-0 at Burnley in September, Scotland 5-0 at Preston in November and Denmark 2-0 in February at Portsmouth. Denmark are ranked five places above England and they recently lost just 1-0 to former world champions USA.
Posh Manager and Owner Barry Fry commented: "It’s a great honour to be hosting the England Ladies game against Iceland at London Road. It gives the city of Peterborough the chance to come to see ladies football at international level.
"The ticket prices are very reasonable, so I hope everyone comes out in their droves to support England and I hope everyone enjoys the game."
Tickets for the match, priced at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions, will go on sale shortly from the Peterborough United FC ticket office.
There will be special group rates for local clubs and schools. For further details check out www.thefa.com or call 0870 0550 442.
