As Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell prepares to meet Italy in Tuesday's Under-21 international in Empoli, he's already got his sights set on this summer's Euro 2011 Finals.
The 19-year-old made a late burst into Stuart Pearce's squad for the 2009 Championship in Sweden where the Three Lions reached the Final and says the experience helped when he returned to Goodison Park for the new season.
Now, with Denmark on the horizon he's hoping an even better run for England can have a bigger impact on his club form.
"Sweden was brilliant for me and it was a shock to be in the Under-21s being so young," he told FATV.
"When I got the list to say I was in the team, I was over the moon. It was a brilliant experience, I played in the game against Germany and got a goal then we got to the Final.
"I took that experience into the next season with Everton and it made me feel a lot better and gave me a lot of confidence.
"If that was to happen again it would be even better. Hopefully we can take it one step further."
Rodwell has 13 caps at Under-21s level and is one of the side's most experienced players.
Ahead of the trip to Tuscany, injury has been a problem for Pearce with a number of players missing, but Rodwell sees it as an opportunity for some of the younger players to push for a chance to be on the plane in June.
"It’s always nice to be with England and this is a good chance for the lads to get together and build some confidence for the up and coming tournament in the summer," added Rodwell.
"We know we’ve got a good squad on paper, but you need game time together to prepare and get to know each other a bit more. If anything it’ll only breed more confidence it we get a good win and get to know what everyone does on the pitch.
"It’s a good chance for the not so regulars to come in and stake a claim and it worked for me a couple of years ago so I’m sure it could work for some of the younger lads who are here today. It’s a good opportunity."
