England Under-21 star Tom Ince hailed a “great night all round” after Gareth Southgate’s men produced an impressive 5-0 Group One win against Lithuania.
A brace each from Ravel Morrison and Saido Berahino and a free-kick from James Ward-Prowse fired the Young Lions to a comfortable victory at Portman Road.
Although England impressed in front of goal, winger Ince was keen to praise his side’s defence after they recorded another clean sheet.
He said: “First of all we have to look at the clean sheet – which is very important.
“With the attacking options we’ve got in the final third, I thought the defence was immense in keeping its concentration.
“And then you leave it up to the front four who can cause damage. It was a great night all round.”
Ward-Prowse, the Southampton midfielder, highlighted the performance of Morrison, who dazzled with his double and all-round display.
He said: “Ravel Morrison is quality. His composure on the ball, he can pick a pass, he can dribble. I think he’s a great addition to the team.”
Meanwhile boss Southgate was not surprised by the margin of victory and feels there is a lot of potential within his young squad.
He said: “We had threatened in our previous games to score a lot of goals and tonight we’ve done it. Tonight we finished our chances off. You can nit-pick and say we could have had more, but it’s good to see the players express themselves in the way they did.
“We want to play with freedom and we want to play with creativity but we have to be professional as well.
“We talked about being a team earlier today. We know the potential of the group of individual. The key now is how we come together as a team and that will take time because there’s a lot of focus on individuals and pressure on individuals.
“One or two of those that had a point to prove tonight did that very well. It’s my job to bring them together as a group.”
