says he is more than happy to be taking charge of England Under-21s next week.
The England Manager will oversee two games against Scotland
in the space of two days, starting at Bramall Lane with the Under-21s on Tuesday before heading south to Wembley for the Seniors 24 hours later.
And Hodgson is looking forward to working with his young charges on a caretaker basis as they prepare for the start of a new Euro qualifying campaign next month.
He revealed: “This will be my first and only match in charge of the Under-21s, I was more than happy to respond to the challenge when offered the chance to take the team.
“The vacancy for a head coach is being advertised by The FA, but it made sense for myself and Ray Lewington to work with the team for these few days on the training ground and at the match.”
Hodgson has named a 25-man squad for the game
and will be working with them at St. George’s Park from Sunday.
The Seniors then arrive too which means Hodgson and his staff will be training with two teams on Monday.
And Hodgson believes that will not cause any problems for him and Lewington, with the training pitch being their favourite and most natural habitat.
He added: “With both squads reporting to St. George's Park at the weekend it means a busy period for us, but being out on the training ground is where we are both happiest
“With it being a World Cup year, but also with the longer term future in mind, I feel there are significant benefits for both myself and Ray in working with these players.
“It is one thing to watch from the sidelines, or to see a game on television, but to actually work with them at first hand on the training field is very enlightening.”
