looks set to lead the line for England Under-21s on Tuesday night as they take on Lithuania at Portman Road.
The Manchester United forward didn’t feature in last week’s victory over San Marino
in Serravalle, but Under-21s boss Gareth Southgate is planning to utilise him in Ipswich.
And Southgate understands the frustration which the former Crystal Palace winger will be feeling with limited first-team opportunities so far at Old Trafford.
Southgate revealed: “It was never my intention to play him in both games this week. I spoke to him in the early part of last week about that and he understands.
“He just wants to play football, but he’s at a fantastic football club and he realises that to get in the team there is going to take a lot of work and patience.
“We’ve had some good discussions about that and every day in training for him is another opportunity to get into that side.”
Southgate has already spoken about the attacking talent
he has at his disposal in the Under-21s squad this time.
And even though Raheem Sterling left the camp to link up with Roy Hodgson’s senior squad
, he still has a difficult job in making his selections after weighing up his squad’s performances on the pitch and the training ground.
He added: “We need players that are ready to come in and perform.
“It’s great that Harry Kane got his hat-trick on Thursday, but we’ve also got Saido who has been excellent for us and getting into the side at West Brom.
“But I always wanted to use these two games to make use of the squad and give more people a start and an idea of what we’re trying to do.
“There also has to be a value on the caps and you’ve got to earn your right to play as well.”
