England Under-21s boss Gareth Southgate
saw his side get off to a winning start on Thursday night, albeit by just a single goal against Moldova.
Saido Berahino’s first-half strike proved to be the difference between the teams at the Madejski Stadium
, but Southgate was more concerned by the quality of his side’s performance than the final scoreline.
It may have been a narrow margin at full time, but the Three Lions’ all-round display was encouraging for Southgate.
He told TheFA.com: "We've done so many things well tonight and it's a remarkable scoreline really, as we could have won by more quite comfortably.
"So I'm really pleased with not only the attitude and the way the players have played today, but they took what they've done in training into the game.
“And but for some remarkable saves and a couple of misses, we'd have been comfortable winners.
"With a bit more ruthlessness around the area, we could have been close to a perfect performance.
"When we look back at it, we'll be really happy with what happened.
"There were some great bits of individual skill and team play and we've totally dominated possession.”
Southgate also spoke of his joy at being back in the coaching hot-seat for this game, as England set out on the road to the Euro Finals in Czech Republic in 2015.
He added: "I was very proud, it was good to be back in the game.
"But more importantly, it was nice to see the players carry out some of the things we worked on during the week.”
