England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce was disappointed by his side's final Euro 2013 defeat to Israel.
Pearce's side finished the tournament without any points after Ofir Krieff struck late on to hand the host nation a 1-0 win in the sides' last Group A game.
He said: "We've been beaten three times; players have to take that on the chin.
"I'm not coming out here and defending anyone. I'm sick to the back teeth of doing that in this tournament. I'm not going to; players have to deal with that.
"The standard we've set ourselves over a three-year period is a million miles away from what we've shown in this period."
But Pearce did have words of praise for Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom, who donned the armband in Jerusalem.
He added: "I thought he captained the side very well and hopefully he'll captain the side in future."
