England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce gave a brutally honest appraisal of his team's performance in a 1-0 defeat to Italy in the opening match of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship Finals - and asked his players to improve dramatically against Norway on Saturday.
Pearce's side went down to an impressive Italy performance in Tel Aviv and the former Three Lions left-back pulled no punches after the final whistle.
He said: "We can't grumble, we were well beaten to be honest with you.
"The better side won, they caused us problems. Their front line caused us problems and we got caught between how to play against them.
"We were awful today, the players know that and we have to get better than that.
"But all you have to do in tournament football is get out the group. We have two games coming up against Norway and Israel and I would say we have to win both of them."
Pearce said the biggest positive coming out of the game was that his team only lost 1-0 despite conceding such much possession to their opponents. So now he's looking for a big performance against Norway at the weekend.
He added: "We stuck in the game even though we were getting dominated. But we didn't play well enough and we have to reload for Saturday and try and win that game.
"Maybe it was nerves at the first game of a tournament. We have played a hell of a lot better coming into this tournament and we'll have to play better to get through. We'll have to come out firing with our chins up on Saturday."
