Ravel Morrison produced a man-of-the-match performance to inspire England Under-21s to victory over Lithuania at Portman Road.
The West Ham midfielder opened the scoring inside two minutes following fine work from Wilfried Zaha down the left.
Zaha tricked his way past Edvinas Girdvainis and drove a low cross into the area before Morrison tucked in from close range with Saido Berahino also lurking.
Lithuania simply could not get to grips with Morrison, whose flurry of stopovers and dragbacks resulted in him earning a free-kick on the edge of the box from which James Ward-Prowse scored his first goal for the Young Lions.
The hosts were now in firm control and Lithuania goalkeeper Lukas Lidakevicius was facing a constant charge at his defence from England’s lively attack.
However, it was the left foot of fullback Jack Robinson which forced him into another good save with a stinging drive from 30 yards.
After the break, the visitors’ ‘keeper and captain made another good stop to save Berahino’s header from point-blank range after a teasing delivery from Tom Ince.
But Gareth Southgate’s side increased their lead in the 63rd minute when Berahino netted his third goal in as many appearances, before Morrison came to the fore again.
Having pounced on a loose ball on the half-way line, Morrison beat one man, burst past two others and then rounded Lidakevicius to roll the ball home for England’s fourth.
Morrison was denied the chance of a hat-trick when West Brom forward Berahino converted a 76th minute penalty for his second of the match as he capped a five-star display for Southgate’s team.
The win puts England top of Group One going into November’s double-header against Finland and San Marino in Milton Keynes and Shrewsbury.
