There were wins for France, Korea Republic, Spain and Portugal on opening day in Turkey
FIFA U20 World Cup
Friday 21 June 2013
Spain's U20 stars followed in the footsteps of their country's victorious senior team and Under-21s as they opened their FIFA U20 World Cup campaign with a superb 4-1 victory over the United States.
Gerard Deulofeu and Jese each scored twice each as the European champions moved to the top of Group A as Turkey 2013 got underway in impressive fashion, with France, Portugal and the Republic of Korea also posting victories.
Jese set the tone for a fine win for the Spanish in Istanbul when, set up by man of the match Deulofeu, he scored after only five minutes.
But it was Barcelona star Deulofeu who stole the headlines with a stunning, curling strike for 2-0.
The third goal came just seconds before half-time, again from Jese, before Deulofeu scored another superb individual goal for number four after the break.
The USA at least managed a late reply - another stunning strike from Luis Gil - but it was Spain who celebrated an excellent victory.
Earlier in the day, France - also in Group A - cruised to a 3-1 win over 2009 champions Ghana in Istanbul thanks to goals from Geoffrey Kondogbia, Yaya Sanogo, and Jean-Christophe Bahebeck.
The French dominated from the very start and only failed to go ahead in the first half because Bahebeck wasted an excellent chance when clean through.
But although Ghana held out for 45 minutes, the French scored three times after the break to clinch a comfortable victory.
A header from Kondogbia, set up by a long throw from Lucas Digne, started it all before Kondogbia's clever pass set up a second for Sanogo. Bahebeck then raced through to shoot home for 3-0 before Ghana scored a late consolation effort through Yiadom Boakye.
In Group B, the Republic of Korea came from a goal behind to beat debutants Cuba 2-1.
Maykel Reyes put Cuba ahead after just seven minutes, but a penalty from Kwon Changhoon and a goal from Ryo Seungwoo gave Korea victory.
But it is Portugal who are the early leaders following a thrilling 3-2 opening-day victory over Nigeria.
They triumphed in their opening game of Turkey 2013 with a pulsating 3-2 win over Nigeria in Kayseri to move to the top of Group B.
Nigeria thought they had earned a point when two gaols from captain Abdul Ajagun helped them come back from 2-0 down at half-time to level the scores.
But Bruma hit the winner for Portugal having also scored in the first half.
Bruma's first came from a neat pass by captain following Joao Mario and he was also involved in Portugal's second as his shot was saved and Aladje followed up.
Nigeria's response was impressive as a stunning through-ball from Olarenwaju Kayode set up Ajagun for 2-1.
And Ajagun then made it 2-2 with even better effort - showing sublime skill to control and curl home a superb goal from inside the penalty area.
But Nigeria's joy lasted only two minutes - because Bruma struck again to clinch victory for Portugal.
