Young Lion steals the plaudits during Everton victory
Roberto Martinez sung the praises of England U20 defender John Stones
after Everton’s victory over Juventus.
The Serie A champions faced the Toffees in San Francisco in the International Champions Cup on Wednesday evening, but despite lining up against stars such as Carlos Tevez, Fernando Llorente and Andrea Pirlo, Stones gave an assured display before emerging as a penalty shootout hero.
Kevin Mirallas had given Everton the lead on the hour mark before Kwadwo Asamoah levelled the scores late on with an unstoppable drive, forcing the outcome to be decided from the spot.
Seconds after Pirlo had missed his kick, Stones stepped up to confidently dink the ball into the net during sudden death, and Seamus Coleman followed suit to seal an impressive victory for the Blues.
As Stones strode forward for his kick, Martinez had no doubts what the outcome would be. He said: "I knew he was going to do it because the last three he has taken in training he has done that. The question was could he do it after Andrea Pirlo and at his age.”
Speaking to evertontv, he added: "It was incredible and I thought it was an example of his performance. He was composed throughout and it was a very useful game for himself and (he could be) a very important 'new' player for us going forward."
