The experience of playing in The FA International U17 Tournament will bode well for the futures of the Young Lions squad according to Head Coach John Peacock.
Peacock’s charges take on Portugal in their opening game of the annual competition on Wednesday night, with Italy and Turkey next up, and he believes it will provide the perfect preparation for his side ahead of the Euro qualifiers in October.
He said: “There is no doubt that tournament football is completely different from the normal week-to-week experience of playing matches.
“Playing three matches in five days, or five matches in 12 days if you reach the European Finals, is a big demand from different many aspects.”
Peacock also believes that the quality of the opposition his side will face over the next few days will tell him more about his squad and the level they are at.
He added: “We look carefully at the opposition we want to ideally face throughout the season in preparation for the qualification matches and we have the pleasure of welcoming three very strong nations at youth level, to help us in this task.
“The likes of Portugal, Turkey and Italy will give us a very good benchmark as to our current standing in Europe at this level.
“That said, this is a friendly tournament that will give all four teams a good chance to gauge the quality and depth of their squads.”
