Jordan Henderson scores as Liverpool beat Olympiakos 2-0 in Steven Gerrard's testimonial
Steven Gerrard was once again the toast of Anfield as the Liverpool great celebrated his testimonial with a 2-0 win over Olympiakos.
A goal apiece from Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson sealed the victory but the day belonged to the England and Reds skipper who has represented his boyhood club for 15 years.
Gerrard has played 630 games and scored 159 goals for Liverpool, winning the Champions League, the UEFA Cup, two FA Cups and three League Cups along the way.
Allen put Brendan Rodgers’ side ahead after 23 minutes with a tap-in and Henderson doubled the lead just after the hour mark with a cool finish from Raheem Sterling’s pass.
Former England internationals Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher were among the Liverpool substitutes and both were afforded generous receptions when they came on.
But the loudest cheer of the afternoon was reserved for Gerrard when he left the field with six minutes remaining, as the Kop erupted to pay tribute to their talismanic skipper.
And after missing the matches against Republic of Ireland and Brazil, the midfielder is back in the frame to lead England against Scotland at Wembley on Wednesday 14 August.
