England captain Steven Gerrard
has hailed Frank Lampard
as the Chelsea midfielder gets set to win his 100th cap in Kiev tonight.
The pair have been at the heart of the Three Lions midfield for the majority of the last decade, and after reaching the milestone himself last year, Gerrard is pleased to see his good friend Lampard join the centurion club.
“No-one deserves it more than Frank. He’s been tremendous for club and country,” said Gerrard.
“He’s a top player and I hope I’m on the pitch when he does get 100 caps to share the moment with him as I’ve been with him all the way through and he’s a good friend of mine.“
Twelve months ago Lampard was linked with a move to LA Galaxy in the MLS, but after staying at Stamford Bridge he helped The Blues to win the Europa League as well as adding yet more impressive displays for his country.
Despite playing for rival clubs, Gerrard was glad to see him stay in the Premier League.
“You’ve seen his form for Chelsea, especially at the back end of last season. He was too good for LA Galaxy.
“Of course, I’d have supported his decision if he’d gone, but for me, he still had a lot to offer in the Premier League and England.”
The pair have been the cause of much debate over the years as to whether they should be paired in the centre of the pitch for England, but on Friday against Moldova they showed how effective they can be with Lampard providing the assist for Gerrard to open the scoring.
“A lot of people talk about me and Frank being in the same team, and we enjoy playing together. On Friday I thought he was going to unload the shot himself, but he was unselfish and laid it on for me.
“You only have to look at his record and anyone who gets near a 100 caps deserves it. He deserves all the accolades he gets and he’s been a top player for club and country for a very long time.”
