England manager Roy Hodgson says he’s expecting a tough test when Scotland visit Wembley next week.
The Three Lions welcome their neighbours to the new Wembley for the first time, and Hodgson is relishing the encounter.
He said: “They’ll be very competitive. They’re preparing like us for some very very important games coming up.
“They’ll probably be slightly in advance of us because a lot of the Celtic players have been preparing for these Champions League qualifiers and there are a good proportion of the squad that plays in Scotland, so they’ll probably be slightly ahead of us, but not light years.”
The meeting will be the final time the squad meet up before the crucial World Cup qualifiers in September and October, and Hodgson is keen to maximise the short amount of time the players have together during next week’s gathering.
“The most important thing to me if I’m being brutally honest is to have a bit of time with the players for two or three days again and get some time on the field,” he added.
“It will be it will be extremely limited, because a lot of the players play on Sunday so I won’t get very much real coaching time – but what I will get is valuable time together, one-to-one, coach-to-player.”
Hodgson sprung a surprise by calling up Ricky Lambert for the first time, but insisted the Southampton forward fully deserved the early season honour.
He said: “One of the things that’s impressed me is that this is a man that’s really come up the hard way. I think ever a man that has worked hard to prove his worth over the years then it’s Ricky Lambert.”
