Norwich's Nathan Redmond warms-up for England duty with winning goal on Saturday
England's number one Joe Hart kept his second clean sheet of the season as Manchester City returned to winning ways with a 2-0 defeat of Hull City.
The goalkeeper, who lined up alongside Joleon Lescott, was rarely troubled as second-half goals from Alvaro Negredo and Yaya Toure propelled the 2012 Premier League champions to victory.
Hull boss Steve Bruce handed starts to England midfielders Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore, while City manager Manuel Pellegrini introduced Three Lions winger James Milner after the interval.
Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino thinks it is great that he has a squad full of young England prospects.
After a narrow 1-0 defeat against Norwich with a squad that included Luke Shaw, James Ward-Prowse and Calum Chambers, Pochettino said: "I think it is great. Young players need confidence and they need to feel trusted that they can play week-in, week-out.
"I think Southampton is a great exponent of that philosophy: to start young players and keep them competitive. I think Southampton overall is a great example for English football."
Norwich boss Chris Hughton was also full of praise for his own England star with Nathan Redmond, who is preparing for Under-21 duty, scoring the winner at Carrow Road.
"We have managed to get Nathan in an upward spiral," Hughton said.
"He is a young player and a very level-headed young man. He trains well and accepts that what is most important is what he does for the team.
"He is going away with the Under-21s and that will be a great experience for him and he knows he has to work hard for the team and he is prepared to do that."
Hughton was also able to wax lyrical about his goalkeeper John Ruddy who is competing with Hart for the England jersey.
"What we have is an excellent goalkeeper and I think he is the England squad because of his abilities," added Hughton.
Meanwhile, West Ham manager Sam Allardyce also had good news for England Manager Roy Hodgson, with regards to striker Andy Carroll.
He revealed: "He has been training every day and will rejoin the rest of the squad next week. We will see how he progresses after that."
