Jose Mourinho says he is not prepared to take any fitness risks with Frank Lampard
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed he will take no risks with Frank Lampard
The England midfielder was expected to start in the Portuguese’s first game back at Chelsea – a friendly against Singha All-Starts – but sat out the 1-0 victory after aggravating an ankle injury during the warm-up.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s next match against a Malaysia XI, Mourinho said: "I don't want to risk.
"It is such a long pre-season we don't need to risk, especially on these pitches, which are not the best quality pitches. If on Sunday he is not 100 per cent, I am not risking him.
"He is an important player for us."
The 35-year-old was in scintillating form for club and country last term, scoring 23 goals in 57 appearances.
He became Chelsea’s record goalscorer in April, after surpassing Bobby Tambling’s record of 202 goals.
Mourinho’s men face the Malaysia XI in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday 21 July, before flying to Jakarta to take on BNI Indonesia All-Stars on 25 July.
Lampard is also likely to play a key role in England’s crucial Autumn World Cup qualifiers, against Moldova and Ukraine in September, followed by Montenegro and Poland in October.
