Steven Gerrard on scoresheet as he and Raheem Sterling star in Reds win
was back on the scoresheet for Liverpool as the Reds defeated Melbourne Victory on Wednesday lunchtime.
The England captain’s first-half strike and a late goal from new signing Iago Aspas sealed a 2-0 win for the Anfield side as they maintained their 100 per cent pre-season record.
Gerrard came close to scoring early in the game when he cut across fellow England international Raheem Sterling
’s pass with a fierce strike which forced the opposition goalkeeper into a fine save, but he wasn’t to be denied again as he did make a breakthrough moments later.
Just after the half hour mark Joe Allen surged forward from midfield and slid a pinpoint pass through to the onrushing Gerrard, who calmly tucked the ball into the corner of net.
Gerrard and Sterling continued to torment the Melbourne defence, and just before half-time the youngster teed up the goalscorer again, but the 33-year-old’s side-footed effort soared narrowly over the crossbar.
Liverpool’s victory was sealed in injury-time when Aspas’ simple tap-in doubled their lead, but the combination play displayed by Gerrard and Sterling will not only whet the appetite of Reds fans, but will also be an exciting prospect for Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson.
The Reds will now jet off to Thailand for the last clash of their three-match summer tour against a Thailand XI on Sunday.
Gerrard and Sterling could be included in Roy Hodgson's squad next month when England take on Scotland at Wembley on Wednesday 14 August. Click here to buy your tickets for the game now.
