Wayne Rooney scored as Manchester United lost 4-1 to Joe Hart's Manchester City
England striker Wayne Rooney scored a stunning free-kick but couldn't prevent Manchester United falling to a 4-1 defeat at rivals Manchester City.
In Sunday's big Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium, a City side that included England internationals Joe Hart and James Milner were 4-0 up before Rooney grabbed a late consolation.
Chris Smalling, Michael Carrick, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley were also among the Three Lions players in action in Manchester.
Earlier in the afternoon in north London, Jack Wilshere put in an impressive performance during Arsenal's 3-1 win over Stoke City.
It was his bursting run from midfield which drew a foul on the edge of the Stoke box with just five minutes played. Mesut Ozil's free-kick was only parried by Asmir Begovic as Aaron Ramsey poked home the rebound.
Kieran Gibbs also featured for the Gunners while England forward Theo Walcott missed the game due to illness.
Four Englishmen played for Tottenham Hotspur in their late, late victory over Cardiff City, with Kyle Walker, Kyle Naughton and Andros Townsend all starting the game. Former Spurs defender Steven Caulker played the full 90 minutes for the Welsh outfit.
And in the day's other match, Under-21s midfielder Jonjo Shelvey set up Swansea City's first goal in their 2-0 win at Crystal Palace, with Michu converting, before Nathan Dyer added a second.
