Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley on what it means to play for England in a new film by Nike
and Tom Cleverley
speak about what playing for the Three Lions means to them in the latest ‘England Matters’.
In the second of these videos, filmed by England kit sponsor Nike, the pair discuss their love of playing for their country and the give an insight into their friendship.
Welbeck, aged 22, said: “Growing up, you are watching your idols playing for their country and it is something that you really want to do yourself. And when you get out there on the pitch that little boy comes out inside.”
The love of the beautiful game started at a young age for 24-year-old Cleverley, and he says he would still be a regular at grounds if he had not made the grade on the pitch.
Cleverley said: “I just love football, and even if I didn’t play it, I’d still be there in the stands being there as a fan.
“It’s frustrating when you can’t do anything about it but I’m one of the lucky ones that can do something on the pitch.”
Both players started the Scotland match last month and gave impressive displays. Cleverley provided the assist for Theo Walcott
to score England’s first before Welbeck scored with a header to take the scores back to 2-2 before a late Rickie Lambert
goal sealed the victory.
On his pass to release Walcott, Cleverley said: “You always think about passes like that in your head. I just checked to make Theo was going and played the ball first time.”
The midfielder was also delighted to see his mate get on the scoresheet. Cleverley added: “I’m always buzzing when we score, but when it is Welbs, my mate outside of football.
“Some people don’t realise the job he does for the team but as a player you can see that firsthand.”
On his goal, Welbeck says: “Wayne [Rooney] had got the free-kick, and I just tried to get myself into a decent position into that special place and I got there.
“Clevs was the first person to celebrate with me and I was buzzing.”
The striker has been named in Roy Hodgson's starting line-up for Friday's World Cup Qualifier against Moldova at Wembley, with Cleverley named among the substitutes.
