England forward scores winner for Arsenal after just 20 seconds at Loftus Road
Theo Walcott bagged the quickest Premier League goal of the season as Arsenal maintained their superb run of form with a 1-0 win at relegated Queens Park Rangers.
The England forward, who has now scored 20 goals in a season for the first time in his career, latched on to Mikel Arteta’s clever pass and threaded the ball into the far corner after just 20 seconds to stun Harry Redknapp’s side.
Walcott’s early strike proved to be sufficient for the visitors, who leapfrogged local rivals Chelsea into third place in the table.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger also brought on Walcott’s international colleagues Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere as late substitutes.
Meanwhile at White Hart Lane, England winger Aaron Lennon limped off after 59 minutes of Tottenham’s 1-0 victory over Southampton after picking up a muscle injury.
The 26-year-old was replaced by Emmanuel Adebayor and went straight down the tunnel for treatment on the problem.
Manager Andre Villas-Boas said: “Both he and Mousa Dembele felt their muscles tighten but they have not ruptured anything.
“There is a small opportunity they will be OK [to face Chelsea on Wednesday] but we will let them settle down then re-assess.”
England striker Jermain Defoe was also in action for Spurs while the Saints boasted Three Lions youngster Luke Shaw in their line-up.
Andy Carroll failed to extend his impressive recent goalscoring form as West Ham United were held to a goalless draw with Newcastle United.
The striker was lively though, with a fine display from visiting goalkeeper Rob Elliot preventing the loanee from Liverpool from netting against his former club.
And the England midfield duo of James Milner and Gareth Barry endured a frustrating afternoon in south Wales as Manchester City drew 0-0 with Swansea City.
Milner was unfortunate not to break the deadlock after seeing his shot thwarted by Wales defender Ashley Williams.
