Leighton Baines can't believe Everton signed his England squad-mate Gareth Barry
Leighton Baines has spoken of his surprise that England squad-mate Gareth Barry was given the green light to join him at Everton this season.
The midfielder signed on a season-long loan from Manchester City ahead of the transfer deadline earlier this month and has already made a big impression at Goodison Park.
And Baines admits that he’s been a welcome and surprise addition to the Everton squad after his impressive debut in their win over Chelsea at the weekend.
Baines revealed: "I've known Gareth through the England set-up and I've always rated him really highly.
"The City lads on the last international break were saying that they can't believe that they haven't kept him and he doesn't play for them.
"That says enough about his worth, for any team he plays in.
"Everyone rates him who he plays with and he has come in and shown what a great asset he is going to be for us.
"We've seen straight away what he can give to the team.”
The 32-year-old was allowed to leave City following the summer arrival of new boss Manuel Pellegrini.
And there have been no complaints from anyone in Roberto Martinez’s squad following a bright start to the campaign and Saturday’s 1-0 win against Chelsea.
"I'm sure Gaz will tell you that he has not played as much as he would have liked and he has already produced a performance like that,” added Baines.
"If he plays like that most weeks, he is going to add to the team.
"It's a great thing to build on and it will give the lads a lot of confidence going into the next games.”
