Former England striker Malcolm Macdonald admits he was pleased when David Platt missed a penalty for the Three Lions back in 1993.
Graham Taylor’s side beat San Marino 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley, with Platt scoring four of the goals.
When Tony Dorigo was felled inside the box Platt had the chance to join an elite band of England players to have scored five goals in one game, but the midfielder saw his spot-kick saved by Pierluigi Benedettini.
Macdonald is one of the four players to have plundered five goals in the same game, against Cyprus in 1975, but the only one to have done so at Wembley so he was pleased his own record stayed intact.
He said: “The next time I saw David Platt I wouldn’t have wanted to have shook his hand [had he scored the penalty]!
“It’s a record I’m proud of. People say ‘it was only against Cyprus’. My answer to that is ‘who else on the night scored?’
“Would you believe that I never played for England again at Wembley?!”
The other three players to have scored five England goals in the same game are:
v Ireland in Belfast in 1882 (Result: 13-0)
v Wales in Cardiff in 1896 (Result: 9-1)
v Northern Ireland in Manchester in 1938 (Result: 7-0).
