England coach and Anfield legend Sammy Lee has piled praise on his former club.
England coach Sammy Lee has heaped praise on his former club Liverpool and Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher in particular as the Reds beat Chelsea to go through to a sixth Champions League or European Cup final.
Lee, who is in Italy with the England U17s at the UEFA European U17 Championship, is an Anfield legend himself and was delighted to see his old side win a passionate encounter at Anfield.
"It doesn't get any better than last night," Lee told TheFA.com. "The players all performed brilliantly I am just so pleased for all the players who deserve this for all the hard work they've put in.
For the first time ever two English sides contested a Champions League semi-final and for the England coach that was a hugely positive sign.
"It was great seeing two English sides play in the semi, knowing we would definitely have a side in the final. The quality that was displayed by both teams was excellent and can only bode well for the future of English football.
"I watched the match here in Italy and what an atmosphere it was at Anfield. The fans are great on those big European nights and that was up there with the best games from the '70s and '80s."
Though Liverpool have found it difficult to find any consistency in the Premiership this year and have had their doubters throughout their Champions League campaign, Lee reveals that he was confident of his old side's chances from the very start of the season.
"I actually fancied them from the very start of the competition. They have a good manager in Rafa Benitez and they've got that defensive platform from which all good sides are built.
"They are well suited to European competition and you don't knock out Juventus and Chelsea unless you are a good side."
At the heart of the Liverpool performance were the towering figures of Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher and those two players were worthy of special praise for spearheading the Liverpool team.
"Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher were fantastic. They are the leaders of the team on the pitch and both played brilliantly.
"Steven was influential in the midfield and Jamie was an inspiration at the back - he's had an incredible season and deserves this chance."
Liverpool will take on AC Milan in the final and Lee was bullish of Liverpool's chances against the Italians in Istanbul.
"Milan will be difficult but I think Liverpool can go to the final and do it - I see no reason why not."
